EMSP 1000 - Basic Life Support 1.0 Credits
Students learn to recognize and respond to life-threatening emergencies such as cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest, and foreign-body airway obstruction (choking). Students learn to recognize heart attack and stroke symptoms in adults and breathing difficulty in children. Participants will learn the skills of CPR for victims of all ages (including ventilation with barrier devices and bag-mask devices), use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), and relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (FBAO).
Note: Upon successful completion of this course the student will earn a Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association.

Course Objectives
- Describe the importance of high-quality CPR and its impact on survival
- Describe all the steps of the Chain of Survival
- Apply the BLS concepts of the Chain of Survival
- Recognize when someone needs CPR
- Perform high-quality CPR for an adult, a child, and an infant
- Describe the importance of early use of an AED
- Demonstrate the appropriate use of an AED
- Provide effective ventilation by using a barrier device
- Describe the importance of teams in multirescuer resuscitation
- Perform as an effective team member during multirescuer CPR
- Describe how to relieve foreign-body airway obstruction for an adult, a child, and an infant
